Pen & Pixel
Within music we often have ground-breaking moments and things will never forget. One of those things for myself is the famous, Pen & Pixel. I remember running across my first Pen & Pixel cover in my dad's cd collection. Snoop Dogg's No Limit sponsored album, "The Game is to be Sold, not to be Told". All the graphics surely did intrigue me and popped out at me. Complex recently did one of their countdowns and their latest being "Hip-Hop's 50 Greatest Album Covers". Going through the list brought back memories and how dope album covers use to be. Of course the covers are not high quality but it's definitely a moment in music you will not forget such as "Grills", Throwback Jerseys, and etc. Below after the cut I've included some of my favorite Pen & Pixel covers.

Jay-Z, Changing Clothes
"...by the songs end I'll probably start another trend."
I was only about four when Jay-Z’s, “Reasonable Doubt” dropped and about seven years later I discovered what became one of my favorite albums of all-time. At that time the Jay-Z I was viewing on television was wearing buttons-up with custom cuff-links and making the world “Change Clothes”. So for me to see a gangster looking Jay-Z on the cover of “Reasonable Doubt” was amazing and even more amazing than that was the lyrics. Mostly referencing the usual drugs and money, the lifestyle we see every rapper display from their first album to their sophomore to their third album (if they even get that far). Unlike those other rappers though Jay-Z did not remain in that lane. Once he made ya’ll believe ya’ll knew who he was and what he stood for he switched it up. Album after album he changed it up keeping his music within the era it was released in. In order to achieve a career in this industry it’s a must. Especially how within a few months you go from doing the Stanky Leg to doing the Dougie. Even within a few years hip-hop once consisting of so much substance now lacks just that. Not only Jay-Z but many other artist such as Lil Wayne, Outkast, and more have been able to transition although many have not. Jay-Z not only changed his image, time and time again but also an entire generation.

Cole World
ripped the package off "Illmatic" and bumped that
for my niggaz it was too complex when Nas rhymed
I was the only Compton nigga with a "New York State of Mind"
A while back my friends and I were having a friendly Hip-Hop debate. The argument began with Wale and then came J. Cole. Many of my friends said they couldn't get with J. Cole and was trying to teach when they just wanted good music to listen to. Being that I've been a avid listener of J. Cole I immediately to criticize them all for not truly listening to what was really being said.
After the debate the topic still bothered me a great deal. Then I realized that this generation is spoil. Since Cole isn't throwing out nursery rhyme lyrics and making them think they rather press skip. Most of this generation have not even listened to Nas' "Illmatic" album. I knew that if I were to play "Illmatic" they would have a hard time since they would actually have to think. I am a hip-hop enthusiast and "Illmatic" is required listening to have a opinion in a hip-hop discussion. In order to truly understand "Illmatic" I really had to listen to what he really was saying. If Nas was currently in Cole's place everyone would be saying he's too complex, he's boring, etc. Many say Cole is a motivational speaker but what rapper is not? All the greats we quote are motivational speakers.
I don't know if it's just me but with hip-hop you really have to listen. The best music is that which makes you listen several times before actually liking the song/album. I've been through it plenty so just take the time and listen.
