ripped the package off "Illmatic" and bumped that
for my niggaz it was too complex when Nas rhymed
I was the only Compton nigga with a "New York State of Mind"
A while back my friends and I were having a friendly Hip-Hop debate. The argument began with Wale and then came J. Cole. Many of my friends said they couldn't get with J. Cole and was trying to teach when they just wanted good music to listen to. Being that I've been a avid listener of J. Cole I immediately to criticize them all for not truly listening to what was really being said.
After the debate the topic still bothered me a great deal. Then I realized that this generation is spoil. Since Cole isn't throwing out nursery rhyme lyrics and making them think they rather press skip. Most of this generation have not even listened to Nas' "Illmatic" album. I knew that if I were to play "Illmatic" they would have a hard time since they would actually have to think. I am a hip-hop enthusiast and "Illmatic" is required listening to have a opinion in a hip-hop discussion. In order to truly understand "Illmatic" I really had to listen to what he really was saying. If Nas was currently in Cole's place everyone would be saying he's too complex, he's boring, etc. Many say Cole is a motivational speaker but what rapper is not? All the greats we quote are motivational speakers.
I don't know if it's just me but with hip-hop you really have to listen. The best music is that which makes you listen several times before actually liking the song/album. I've been through it plenty so just take the time and listen.
